Starting from looking at a project at my area workplace. I was excited to learn everything about management project. It is very cool for me. And another reason is since I've bored with operational work. For it, I'm looking for a new challenge to become a project manager. So, what is Project Management? How to become a Project Manager? Join a course or autodidact? Perhaps this question is certainly crossed by someone who has just wanted to plunge into the project world. Then to satisfy my curiosity I try to find out more, what is Management Project? Alright on this occasion. I will try to review the Project Management based on the various references I've got. So, please attention to me!
Well, to be a professional in Project management (PM), in my opinion, the first and foremost is INTENTION and a strong DESIRE to learn about it. And learning the most effective is learning by doing. Because basically, the PM that has been defined in some of the literations that I know, is more of a combination of Science, Skills, and Art. For that, the project experience is the one that is the performer.
There is one thing that is very important to remember. Yes, that is the Project Management Triangle which is a project management model used by project managers to analyze and understand the level of difficulty that may be happening at the time of project execution. The shape is an equilateral triangle where the three sides are time, cost, and done quickly/ scope. The area of the triangle formed by all three sides is DQ (deliverables quality)/quality of work result. So basically all the existing elements should fit the portions, because if one side is reduced, the triangular shape will not be symmetrical, and certainly will affect the area of the triangle. That means it will affect the quality of work results.
Then how to create these three elements to become a symmetrical triangle? There are a few things that a PM must master, the first being:
1. Set of Skill
As written in Project Management Body of Knowledge Guide (PMBOK Guide) and some literature, the set of skills that must be owned to be professional PM, are as follows:
- Planning: It is the ability to plan work. Which means it is able to identify the tasks to be done, including identifying the various dependencies in doing the work, the ability to estimate the cost, time and resources needed to complete the project.
- Controlling: It is the ability to view, assess the status and control of a project. A PM needs to know how to determine the status of an ongoing project, (Where we are) and also to its details. Using existing methodologies and techniques, such as EV analysis (Earn Value Analysis), Critical Path Method Analysis, Risk and Issue Register and so son.
- Managing: It is the ability to manage every aspect of a project, including the ability to manage various risks in the project. Because a professional PM should be able to identify any risk that comes both from internal and external project organizations.
2. Set of Arts
Project Management is also an art, in the sense that project management is more of behavior and attitude to be a good manager. Being PM is like a conductor in a musical opera that requires leadership and organizes the game all musical instruments and melodies to be a beautiful harmony. Many things are written in various writings about good PM especially about this behavior, but some of the most important things I can write as follows:
- Thinking Ahead/ Vision, that is someone who has a vision or foresight in the scope of a project. Always think ahead, in determining the steps. For most people, they only focus on the tasks that are in front of him, but unfortunately (maybe) they don't see further ahead and anticipate what will happen in front of a project.
- Attention to Details, sometimes a small problem if not in the handle well it will cause a big problem later on. As is often mentioned in the management problem of The evil is in the details. So a PM needs attention to every detail of the problem and should be able to give priority to the problems that should be faced by the project. Although in practice not necessarily all problems are done by a PM himself. That is to pay attention to the details of each issue, will provide guidance to the Project Management Team (PMT) members to pay attention to the problem in accordance with the area.
- Ability to Influence/ Leadership is the ability of Project Manager to be able to influence, direct and lead a team. The ability to influence depends on the ability of communication to influence a person. Good planning will not mean if you can't follow along. Although, by one of the project members only. Because the project is a team's job of just personal work. Even in some reference mentions the time a Project Manager in a project 90% was COMMUNICATION.
So, now everyone already knows that the ability of a project manager in a project is very influential and important in the continuity of the project. Enough for this article, don't forget to click the Share button, if you like this article! See you on another occasion. Thank you.
